Charles Ellis Schumer was born in Brooklyn, New York on November 23, 1950.

Chuck grew up in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn, first attending PS 197, followed by Madison High School. Chuck's father, Abe Schumer, owned an exterminating business. His mother, Selma, raised Chuck, his younger brother Robert and his younger sister Fran. The family spent part of their summers enjoying the sand and surf at Rockaway Beach.

Chuck was a good student and a hard working basketball player (in fact, Chuck later went on to play basketball on an intermural House of Representatives team whose motto was, "We're small but we're slow."). In high school, Chuck was a member of his school's "It's Academic" team and a National Merit scholar, graduating as valedictorian. He also worked in a printing shop for a Brooklyn High School teacher named Stanley Kaplan who was in the early stages of building his test preparation business.
