SCHUMER: STEWART AIRPORT TO RECEIVE $200,000
Money will be used to improve cargo security
US Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that the US Department
of Transportation has awarded $200,000 in Federal Aviation Administration
(FAA) grants to Stewart Airport in Newburgh for security improvements.
“Safe and secure air service is a critical engine of the
Hudson Valley’s continued economic growth,” said Schumer.
“In a post- 9/11 era, you can never be too careful. This funding
will allow Stewart Airport to beef up cargo security to meet today's
modern aviation demands.”
Stewart Airport will use the grant to upgrade gate security in
the cargo area.
In May, Schumer helped to bring Independence Air to Stewart Airport.
Independence Air will begin service on six daily round trip flights
from to Washington DC and 21 connecting cities for as low as $49
for a one-way ticket in September. In April, Schumer urged the federal
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to increase the number
of screeners at Stewart Aiport to alleviate the long waits on screening
lines that have resulted from unprecedented growth at the airport.
