SCHUMER ANNOUNCES $500,000 FOR HAUPTMAN-WOODWARD MEDICAL
RESEARCH CENTER IN BUFFALO
Funding included in FY05 Omnibus Appropriations bill
US Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced Congress passed $500,000
in federal funding for the Hauptman Woodward Medical Research Center
in Buffalo. $250,000 of the funds are listed in the Energy and Water
and $250,000 of the funds are listed in the Labor Health and Human
Services and Education Appropriations sections of the Fiscal Year
2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill. The bill now heads to the President
for his signature.
"Hauptman-Woodward's new research center is a win-win for
Buffalo," Schumer said. "It will continue the excellent
medical research at Hauptman-Woodward, and be a lynchpin in the
economic revitalization of downtown Buffalo."
The building, when completed, will house the Hauptman-Woodward
Medical Research Institute, home to Buffalo's Nobel Laureate Dr.
Herbert A. Hauptman. It is part of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus
being planned for downtown Buffalo, which will include Hauptman-Woodward,
the Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the University at Buffalo Center
of Excellence in Bioinformatics, Kaleida Health and the Buffalo
Medical Group Foundation. The building was designed by acclaimed
architect Mehrdad Yazdani of Cannon Design in Los Angeles.
Schumer said the new Center for Structural Biology will bring new
jobs to the City of Buffalo, revitalize the downtown core, be at
the epicenter of cutting-edge scientific research, and help to revitalize
the Fruit Belt neighborhood surrounding the proposed Medical Campus.
