SCHUMER SECURES OVER $1.9 MILLION FOR HOSPITAL FOR SPECIAL
SURGERY IN NEW YORK CITY
Funding Part of the FY 2005 Omnibus Appropriations Bill
Funding will be used for expansion of Musculoskeletal Research
Center
US Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced Congress will pass
$1,900,000 in federal funding for the Hospital For Special Surgery
in New York City. The funding was included in the Labor, Health
and Human Services, and Education Appropriations section of the
Fiscal Year 2005 Omnibus Appropriations bill. The bill now heads
to the President for his signature.
"The National Center on Musculoskeletal Research will be of
great service to health care. It's specific research agenda includes
work on the treatment and possible cure of diseases such as lupus
and rheumatoid arthritis which affect millions of Americans and
New Yorkers," Schumer said.
The funding will be used to establish the National Center on Musculoskeletal
Research located on the Hospital for Special Surgery's campus in
New York City. The goal of the center will be to enhance its current
research program focused on musculoskeletal disorders prevalent
in older adults and women. Specifically, funding will be spent to
develop research facilities and staffing, recruit scientists, endowment
and research programs.
The Hospital for Special Surgery is focused on treating and researching
musculoskeletal disease and the funding to establish a new center
for research that will be based on highly focused research which
will include work on discovering treatments and cures for lupus
and rheumatoid arthritis. In addition the center will also focus
on new therapies that can help to re-build fragile bones, construct
artificial joint replacements that last a lifetime, promoting long
term mobility for older patients and education about disease prevention
and treatment.
