US Senator Charles E. Schumer today met with his former US Senate
rival, Howard Mills to discuss ways they can work together to help
New York. Schumer and Mills had discussed having the meeting when
Mills called to concede to Schumer last month.
"I've always had a tradition of breaking bread with my opponents
after the election," Schumer said. "We had a great time
reminiscing about the campaign, exchanging war stories, and talking
about some of the things we each want to do for New York. During
campaigns, politics is fine but afterwards we need to work together
and that's what today was about."
The pair met in Frontier Diner on Third Avenue and 39th Street
in midtown Manhattan. In addition to sharing "war stories"
from the campaign, the pair talked about problems facing Mills's
Orange County and ways to improve New York State, focusing primarily
on economic development.
In the election, Schumer ran on the Democratic, Independence, and
Working Families lines and won re-election to a second term. The
Republican Party candidate, Mills is an out-going Assemblyman from
Hamptonburgh.
