Every year, Chuck commits to traveling to all62 counties in New York to meet with constituents.
On 1/26/22, joined by a broad group of Long Island religious and community leaders at Young Israel of Woodmere, which has benefited from around $125,000 in not-for-profit security (NSGP) funds, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer said the Texas Synagogue hostage situation has renewed worry across the Island and the entire religious community. Schumer explained that he actually doubled the federal NPSG pot from $90M in 2020 to $180M in 2021, but that there remains more need, especially in New York. Schumer said over 2,000 religious or not-for-profit sites still want help with security, and so, he is pushing a plan to, again, double the federal pot--- bringing the total to $360M. Schumer said New York would see a sizable amount from this pot, as it does with the current breakdown, which he further detailed. Schumer said that recent attacks at the national level, unease in New York and the fact that there remains a clear need demands that the federal government help these unique and celebrated places of both worship and respite fortify their security, so they can focus more on prayer, reflection and hope for their congregations and our larger communities.
