\nOn November 21, 2011, Schumer spoke, alongside Calhoun High School's football coach and football captains, about proposed legislation that would improve high school football helmet safety standards and help cut down on concussions among Long Island youth. Currently, high school football players are using helmet's that don't include the latest features to help cushion blows. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 920,000 athletes under the age of 18 were treated for football related injuries in the year 2007. Schumer's legislation, The Children's Sports Athletic Equipment Safety Act, would ensure that new and reconditioned football helmets for high school students meet new safety standards.
