SCHUMER ANNOUNCES FULL SENATE APPROPRIATIONS COMMITTEE APPROVES HIS REQUEST FOR FUNDING FOR CHEMUNG COUNTY'S INDUSTRIAL CENTER AT HORSEHEADS- COUNTY SET TO RECEIVE $750,000

Funding Will Be Used to Build New Two-Lane Truck Access Road

Construction of Road Will Enhance Economic Opportunities

Bill Will Now Be Sent To The Full Senate

U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today announced that the full Senate Appropriations Committee has approved the FY11 Appropriations Bill which includes $750,000 for Chemung County. The funding will be used to construct a truck access road to Route 13 that will help with the development of the Industrial Center at Horseheads. Schumer worked closely with members of the Appropriations Committee to include funding for the project in this year's spending bill.

"Access to high quality roads and 21 st century infrastructure are the keys to growth in the Southern Tier," Schumer said. "This project will enhance commercial development at the Horseheads Industrial Center, helping to bring jobs and economic development to the entire region."

The Center at Horseheads is a 500 acre industrial park constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers in the 1940s as a military depot. Since then, the Center has become a hub of industrial activity in the Southern Tier that has only increased with the recent designation of Interstate 86. This project will create an access way for large trucks, increasing commercial opportunity all while maintaining a livable neighborhood. The entire Horseheads construction project is projected to create 1,3001,500 jobs, 775 of which will be maintained after construction is completed.

Now that the bill has been approved by the full Senate Appropriations Committee, it will be sent to full Senate.  Then the bill will move towards conference with the House and then to the President for signature.
