Today, U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer announced that Lockheed Martin Mission Systems and Sensors in Owego has received a Navy contract award totaling $13,516,318 to extend a previously awarded contract for the upgrade of data and software systems of MH60R helicopters. This award will improve the ability of the helicopter to transmit data from its sensors, providing more information and a better understanding of the battle space to military commanders. The work will take place at the Owego location and is expected to be completed in June 2015.
"This federal contract means our troops will benefit from the best military systems in the world, all while investing in Lockheed Martin and its workers in Owego where these helicopters are made," said Senator Schumer. "I applaud the Navy's commitment to working with Lockheed Martin, which confirms what we already knew: Lockheed is a firstclass defense firm doing incredible work across the State."
The MH60R SEAHAWK helicopter is used today by the U.S. Navy as a primary platform for antisubmarine warfare in open ocean and littoral zones. This helicopter is the world's most advanced maritime helicopter. It is the most capable naval helicopter available today, and can operate from the shore and from a variety of ships. Also known as the 'Romeo', the MH60R combines the capabilities of the Navy's legacy SH60B and SH60F helicopters into a single sensorrich platform operated by a threeperson crew. The MH60R can also be used for search and rescue, supply delivery, medical evacuation, and communications relay. The MH60R uses stateoftheart smart automation to process sensor data into actionable knowledge, prioritize threats for the crew to act on, and reduce workload. This advanced aircraft provides naval commanders with unmatched capabilities in the critically important "submarine hunting" mission.
Lockheed Martin is a global defense and security company with approximately 126,000 employees worldwide, and 4,000 employees at their Systems Integration - Owego location. The Company delivers a range of products and services for air, land and naval forces, as well as advanced electronics, security, information technology solutions and support services.
