SCHUMER ANNOUNCES NY IS FIRST STATE IN THE NATION APPROVED TO LAUNCH HOME ELECTRIFICATION REBATES PROGRAM DELIVERING $158 MILLION THROUGH INFLATION REDUCTION ACT TO LOWER ENERGY COSTS FOR NYers

Funding Is From Schumer’s IRA – The $8.8 Billion For The Home Energy Rebate Programs To Lower Energy Costs And Increase Efficiency In Homes Across America

New York Becomes First State in the Nation to Have Home Electrification Rebate Application Approved, Setting Stage for Summer Launch

Schumer: This Funding Will Energize NYS — Lowering Costs & Pollution Across State

U.S Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer today announced the Department of Energy (DoE) has approved New York’s application as the first in the nation for the Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates Programs created thanks to his passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. Specifically, DoE will deliver a $158 million grant award to New York to support the electrification of low-income New Yorkers’ homes. Schumer explained with this federal support, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) will launch a state-wide rebate program to lower energy costs and increase efficiency in low-income New York homes by making it cheaper to install measures such as heat pumps, electrical panels, and insulation. Schumer said New York is the first state to receive funding to launch a rebates program, which is expected to begin accepting rebate applications from consumers this summer.

“The bold and impactful Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates Program, created by the historic Inflation Reduction Act, is a win-win-win that will save consumers money on energy bills, reduce pollution causing climate change, and advance environmental justice. This $158 million in federal funding will help low-income New Yorkers save on energy bills and reduce pollution by replacing dirty, inefficient appliances with modern energy units,” said Senator Schumer. “The Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program is another great example of the deeply impactful policies imbedded at the heart of the IRA to reduces emissions while promoting environmental justice and spurring more investment in cleaner technologies. I am proud to deliver this funding and will continue fighting to lower pollution and save costs to lead New York to a healthier future.”

Schumer’s landmark Inflation Reduction Act provides nearly $400 billion to support clean energy and address climate change, including $8.8 billion for the Home Energy Rebates. Broken up into two programs – one focused on electrification of low-income homes that DOE is announcing today, and a broader program focused on efficiency that DOE has yet to announce – this significant federal investment is designed to move the market by making clean technologies cheaper than incumbent fossil options. These rebates will put money directly back in the hands of American households by helping families  save money on select home improvement projects that can lower energy bills. DOE estimates these rebates will save households up to $1 billion annually on energy bills and support over 50,000 U.S. jobs.
