Schumer Floor Remarks on Senator John McCain

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today delivered remarks on the Senate floor. Below are his remarks:

The news of Senator McCain’s cancer diagnosis sent a shock wave through the Senate last night. Senator McCain is a dear friend to many here in this body; he is a dear friend of mine – and from the bottom of my heart I wish him well and know that every member in this chamber does the same.

I agree with what the Majority Leader said earlier: John McCain is an American hero. There is no one who has done more to serve his country in this chamber than Senator McCain. There is no one who is more passionate in his defense of our soldiers and our defense than Senator McCain. He has been at the center of every major policy debate in this chamber in the past decade and a half. Without Senator McCain around, this body is a little less than what it should be.

We know that he’ll fight this the only way that John McCain knows how – with every fiber of his being. We wish him well and hope that he rejoins us very soon.
