SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE $10.5 MILLION IN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FUNDING FOR ELMIRA/CORNING REGIONAL AIRPORT IN CHEMUNG COUNTY

Department of Transportation Funding Will Be Used For New Renovations & Infrastructure Upgrades

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $10,500,000 in federal funding for the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport in Chemung County. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Specifically, the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport will use the funding to move forward with renovations to the passenger terminal building. 

“Keeping our airports in top-notch shape is crucial to attracting business and tourism to Chemung County,” said Senator Schumer. “With this funding, the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport will be able to renovate its passenger terminal which will improve comfort, safety and operations for the passengers and pilots that fly in and out of Chemung County every day.”

“Investing in infrastructure at our airports makes them safer and more efficient for businesses and travelers,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These funds allocated through the Department of Transportation are an important investment that will allow the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport to upgrade its facilities. I will continue to push for resources that would improve service and enhance convenience for travelers at airports across New York.”

The funding will cover the first phase of the project that include demolition of the eastern half of the terminal building, construction of the passenger departure lounge, public circulation space, inbound baggage handling system, and general site and utility renovations.

This funding is awarded through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and is administered by DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Airport Improvement Program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.
