SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE $7 MILLION IN FED FUNDING FOR ELMIRA/CORNING REGIONAL AIRPORT IN CHEMUNG COUNTY
Federal Dept. of Transportation Grant Funds Critical Infrastructure Improvements
U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $7,000,000 in federal funding for the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport in Chemung County. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Specifically, the grant will fund the construction of a taxiway and the rehabilitation of the airport apron, an area used for aircraft parking, loading, unloading, refueling, and boarding.
“Making sure our airports are clear for takeoff is essential for the safety of air travelers and the smooth functioning of the local economy,” said Senator Schumer. “This much-needed funding will allow the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport to make critical upgrades to its taxiways, which will enhance overall quality for the passengers and pilots that fly in and out of Chemung County every day.”
“Investing in our airport infrastructure enables safer, more efficient service for the businesses and travelers who utilize it every day,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These funds through the Department of Transportation are a major investment that will allow the Elmira/Corning Regional Airport to renovate and upgrade their facilities. I will continue to push for resources that enhance public safety and efficiency at airports across New York.”
“We are very excited for this critical taxiway and apron project that will enhance safety of aircraft operations at Elmira-Corning Regional Airport. Taxiing aircraft will now be directed away from critical intersection points of the runway and in the process, space will also be better utilized on the parking apron for our terminal area which continues to experience significant growth,” said Bill Hopper, Director of Aviation, Elmira-Corning Regional Airport.
“The $7 million grant from the DOT is great news for the Elmira Corning Regional Airport. These monies will significantly enhance the safety of our ground operations at the Airport. This funding is awarded through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and is administered by DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Airport Improvement Program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.
