SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $22K IN FED FUNDS FOR THE WHITEHALL VOLUNTEER FIRE COMPANY IN WASHINGTON COUNTY

Fed Funding Will Be Used to Purchase New Equipment to Keep Firefighters Safe

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $22,858 in federal funding for the Whitehall Volunteer Fire Company Inc. in Washington County. This funding was allocated through the Department of Homeland Security's Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program. Specifically, this funding will be used to purchase Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to keep firefighters safe. PPE typically consists of turnout coats, bunker pants, gloves, hoods and helmets.

“With this funding, first responders in Washington County can focus on their important work knowing they have new, reliable and protective equipment,” said Senator Schumer. “This federal investment will help ensure that our local heroes can continue their life-saving work as effectively and safely as possible.”

“Our first responders are on the frontlines during emergencies and should have the most up-to-date equipment to carry out their lifesaving work," said Senator Gillibrand. “The equipment purchased with this grant will help ensure the Whitehall Fire Company is safe and ready to respond."

“We are very excited to get the grant and we very much need it in the department. We have very many needs and this is one less thing that we have to budget for. It is a great relief to get this gear,” said Whitehall Fire Chief Brian Brooks.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grants are administered by the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the Department's United States Fire Administration. The grants are awarded on a competitive basis to the applicants that most closely address the program's priorities and demonstrate financial need.  More information on the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program can be accessed at http://www.firegrantsupport.com/.
