SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $2.3 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR SCHENECTADY COUNTY AIRPORT

Federal Dept. of Transportation Grant Will Fund Critical Runway Upgrades

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $2,336,291 in federal funding for Schenectady County Airport. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Specifically, the funding will be used to install new airfield guidance signs, rehabilitate an aging runway and replace critical runway lighting.

“In order for the Capital Region’s economy to thrive, we must continue to attract business and tourism to the area,” said Senator Schumer. “That’s why it is essential to ensure that our transportation hubs are providing safe, efficient service to passengers and pilots. This grant will fund the runway upgrades we need to keep Schenectady County Airport in top-notch shape.”

“Investing in our airport infrastructure is critical for the hundreds of travelers and businesses who rely on it every day,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Schenectady County Airport  is a major hub in the Capital Region, and it has to meet the best standards for efficiency and safety. This latest installment of federal funds through the Department of Transportation allows the airport to begin several key renovations  and upgrades to their facilities. I will continue to fight for these resources to help enhance efficiency and public safety at New York airports.”

This funding is awarded through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and is administered by DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Airport Improvement Program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.
