SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $450K IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR MASSENA INTERNATIONAL-RICHARDS FIELD AIRPORT

Fed. Dept. of Transportation Funds Airport’s Completion of the Final Phase of Lighting & Visual Guidance System Rehabilitation Project

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $458,937 in federal funding for the Massena International-Richards Field Airport in St. Lawrence County, NY.  The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This funding will allow the airport to complete the final phase of its project to rehabilitate the lighting systems for multiple runways and taxiways. This funding also supports the replacement of an outdated precision approach path indicator system, and a replacement runway end identifier lights system. This equipment will ensure the utmost safety of airfield operations at the Massena International-Richards Field Airport, especially in times of low visibility and poor weather conditions.

“This federal funding will allow the Massena International-Richards Field Airport to finish critical renovations to their runways, specifically their lighting and visual guidance systems,” said Senator Schumer.  “Making these crucial infrastructure upgrades will better ensure all of the passengers and pilots traveling in and out of the North Country each day have a safe and convenient trip.”

“This funding will help advance runway renovations at the Massena International-Richards Field Airport,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Investing in our airport’s infrastructure enables safer, more efficient service for the businesses and travelers who utilize it every day. I will continue to push for resources that enhance efficiency and public safety that New Yorkers can rely on.”

“On behalf of the Town of Massena and the Town Council, I would like to express our appreciation for this federal assistance. Without the funding, we would not be able to further modernize our airport,” said Massena Town Supervisor Joseph D. Gray.

This funding is awarded through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and is administered by DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Airport Improvement Program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.
