SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE MORE THAN $740K IN FEDERAL FUNDS FOR ROCHESTER-FINGER LAKES AIRPORTS IN MONROE, ONTARIO & GENESEE COUNTIES

Federal Dept. of Transportation Grants Will Fund Critical Safety and Infrastructure Upgrades at Area Airports

U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $747,560 in federal funding for airports across the Rochester-Finger Lakes region. The funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Specifically, the Genesee County Airport in Batavia will receive $559,350 to remove 15 acres of tree obstructions and reconstruct 1,400 feet of perimeter fencing. The Greater Rochester International Airport in Monroe County will receive $123,210 to identify existing obstructions that pose a risk to safe airfield operations and need to be removed. Finally, the Canandaigua Airport in Ontario County will receive $65,000 to design a 2,800-square-foot snow removal facility.

“The success of the region’s economy depends on consistent, reliable air travel,” said Senator Schumer. “These transportation hubs are crucial to attracting business and tourism to the area. This federal funding will ensure that they continue to operate as safely and efficiently as possible. That’s why I’m committed to keeping up the fight to secure the resources our local airports need to stay in top-notch shape every day of the year.”

“Investing in our airport infrastructure enables safer, more efficient service for the businesses and travelers who utilize it every day,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These funds through the Department of Transportation are a major investment for several airports in the Rochester-Finger Lakes region to renovate and upgrade their facilities. I will continue to push for resources that enhance efficiency and public safety at our airports.”

“The Greater Rochester International Airport is a key driver of economic growth and tourism here in Monroe County,” said Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo. “This grant allows our airport to remain safe and up-to-date, while continuing to serve travelers from around the world. I thank Senator Gillibrand and Senator Schumer for supporting and helping ensure Monroe County's airport's successful future.”

This funding is awarded through the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and is administered by DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The Airport Improvement Program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust Fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.
