SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE NEARLY $1.5 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR ITHACA’S CAYUGA LAKE WATERFRONT REVITALIZATION PROJECT
Washington D.C. - U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $1,372,533 in federal funding to develop pedestrian-friendly infrastructure along the Cayuga Lake Waterfront in the City of Ithaca. These funds will be used to redesign a .85 mile stretch of Route 13 to better facilitate pedestrian and bikers usage, and to greatly reduce traffic. The funds will also extend 5th Street for direct access to the Cayuga Lake waterfront.
“Ithaca’s Cayuga Lake is a Southern Tier gem and this substantial federal grant will only increase its luster by increasing environmentally friendly waterfront access,” said Senator Schumer. “By investing in pedestrian- and bike-friendly infrastructure at the lake’s waterfront, especially during the pandemic, we ensure that all New Yorkers are able to enjoy the breathtaking scenery that the Southern Tier has to offer – all while reducing harmful fossil fuels. I am proud to deliver this funding that will make Cayuga Lake more accessible to Ithaca’s residents and visitors alike.”
“As the COVID pandemic continues into the fall, opportunities for outdoor recreation are more important than ever,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Investing in and revitalizing local infrastructure will ensure that Ithaca’s walking and biking trails remain accessible to all New Yorkers. I will continue fighting for the resources to provide a path to the outdoors and the chance to safely enjoy New York’s natural beauty.”
This funding was administered through the Department of Transportation's (DOT) Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) Transportation Discretionary Grants program. For more information click here.
