SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE OVER $12K IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR THE MILTON FIRE DISTRICT IN ULSTER COUNTY

Funding Will Be Used to Purchase a New Washer, Extractor, Dryer System to Protect Firefighter Gear from Contamination

Washington, DC – U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $12,143 in federal funding for the Milton Fire District. The funding was allocated through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program and will be used to purchase a new washer, extractor, and dryer system that will meet the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards for contamination control on the firefighter’s turnout gear.

“It is essential that we provide our firefighters with the equipment they need to stay safe on the job,” said Senator Schumer. “Our first responders are our local heroes and our first line of defense for safety and security – it is critical that we do all we can to ensure that they are well equipped and prepared to take on any emergency. This funding will do just that, by allowing the firefighters of the Milton Fire District to purchase a new washer and dryer system that will prevent contaminants on their clothes and equipment from harming their health.”

Firefighters risk their lives to protect our communities, exposing themselves to dangerous chemicals in order to keep us all safe,” said Senator Gillibrand. “This federal funding will allow the Milton Fire District to purchase new equipment that will help protect firefighters’ health and safety as they do their jobs, and I will always fight to make sure that our local fire departments have the resources they need.”

“Milton Fire District couldn't be more excited in securing the FEMA Grant, the $12,143.00 grant will enable us to purchase a washing machine and dryer to properly clean and dry soiled turnout gear which is essential for keeping firefighters safe from contaminants that could potentially lead to cancer and other illnesses,” said Chief Stephen Kneeter.

The Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) Program is administered by the Department of Homeland Security Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the Department’s United States Fire Administration. The grants are awarded on a competitive basis to the applicants that most closely address the program’s priorities and demonstrate financial need.
