SCHUMER, GILLIBRAND ANNOUNCE OVER $17 MILLION IN DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION FUNDING TO UPGRADE AIRPORTS THROUGHOUT UPSTATE NEW YORK

USDOT Funding Will Be Used For Over 36 Infrastructure Projects At Airports Across Upstate New York

Funding Will Be Used For Renovations and Improvements to Operational Efficiency In The Capital Region, Hudson Valley, Southern Tier, Central & Western New York, Rochester-Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley and The North Country

Washington, DC – U.S. Senators Charles E. Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand today announced $17,182,465 in federal funding for 36 critical infrastructure projects at local airports across Upstate New York. This funding was allocated through the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) Airport Improvement Program (AIP). Specifically, the federal funding will be used for renovations and improvements to operational efficiency to airports in the Capital Region, Hudson Valley, Southern Tier, Central & Western New York, Rochester Finger Lakes, Mohawk Valley and North Country.

“Keeping our airports and infrastructure in top-notch shape is crucial to attracting business and tourism to the region,” said Senator Schumer. “This federal investment will help the Hudson Valley and surrounding communities to make the critical infrastructure upgrades that will enable safer, more efficient service for the passengers and pilots who fly in and out of the region every day.”

“Investing in our airport infrastructure enables safer, more efficient service for the businesses and travelers who utilize it every day,” said Senator Gillibrand. “These funds are a major investment that will provide several airports across Upstate New York with the resources to renovate and upgrade their facilities. I will continue to push for resources that enhance efficiency and public safety at airports across New York.”

“The Hudson Valley Regional Airport is a prime asset and destination within Dutchess County, and this latest funding will enable us to continue our efforts to expand and improve offerings for aviation companies, businesses and the public. We thank Senators Gillibrand and Schumer for helping us to secure close to $83,000 in critical FAA funding to improve the runway safety area at our airport through the creation of an Engineered Material Arresting System. This project will enhance safety and operations for our airport personnel, as well as the pilots and passengers who make use of our runways on a daily basis,” said Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro.

“Westchester County Airport is a great asset to the region and vital to its economy. We work long and hard to ensure that it’s operating safely, efficiently and cost-effectively while simultaneously balancing the needs and concerns of passengers, private aviation and residents who live near the airport.  These FAA grants go a long way in helping the county provide safe, efficient and cost-effective operations, and we’re grateful to our federal partners for delivering these valuable resources to Westchester County,” said County Executive Robert P. Astorino.

This funding is part of the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) and is administered by DOT’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). AIP provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Funds obligated for the AIP are drawn from the Airport and Airway Trust fund, which is supported by user fees, fuel taxes, and other similar revenue sources.
