Schumer, Gillibrand, Morelle: Over $5 Million From The Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law Will Help Rochester Airport Reach New Heights!

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer, U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and U.S. Congressman Joseph Morelle today announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded the Frederick Douglass - Greater Rochester International Airport $5,225,000 in federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. This funding is on top of the over $27 million for Rochester’s Frederick Douglass Airport is already expected to receive in programmatic funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law and $5.4 million for other Finger Lakes airports. The representatives said that this funding will allow the Rochester Airport to modernize the airport and replace 5 of the existing 30 year old airport owned boarding bridges with new state of the art efficient bridges.

“This $5 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law will give the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester Airport the lift it needs to reach new heights,” said Senator Schumer. “As majority leader, I am proud we passed the Bipartisan Infrastructure & Jobs Law and to land this significant boost in funding for Rochester to give our travelers the modern facilities they need to help the Finger Lakes soar.”

“This federal funding from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law is excellent news for airline passengers and the Greater Rochester International Airport,” said Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. “Improvements will be made to replace current passenger boarding bridges with new, cutting-edge, energy efficient bridges. This investment will help modernize Rochester’s airport and lay the foundation for its future.”

“I’m proud to have worked in partnership with Senator Schumer and Senator Gillibrand to secure this funding for the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport which will not only update our aging infrastructure, but also increase accessibility and environmental sustainability,” said Congressman Joe Morelle. “This investment will create good paying jobs here in Rochester and ensure we are ready to compete and succeed in an increasingly global economy. I look forward to our continued work together to transform and strengthen the future of our community’s transportation hub.”

Monroe County Executive Adam Bello said, “Thank you Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Joe Morelle, for your advocacy and leadership in securing these important federal dollars to the Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport. We are one of just two New York airports to receive this critical infrastructure improvement funding. This is a unique opportunity to continue to improve the ROC Airport terminal as leisure and business air travel rebounds from the COVID-19 pandemic. The $5.2 million in federal funding will allow us to replace aging passenger boarding bridges with state-of-the-art and energy efficient bridges that will improve the passenger experience and safety.”

The lawmakers explained that the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law provided $5 billion in competitive grants for airport terminal development projects that address the aging infrastructure of the nation’s airports, and Rochester has just been announced as an awardee from the first $1 billion tranche of funding. The new competitive funding addresses the long overdue terminal needs to expand capacity, provide better accessibility, and increase sustainability. In total, New York’s airports are expected to receive over $937 million in federal funding because of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
