SCHUMER MEETS WITH FORT DRUM’S MAJOR GENERAL NAUMANN, COMMANDING GENERAL OF THE 10th MOUNTAIN DIVISION

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer released the following statement on his meeting with Major General Scott Naumann, Commanding General of the 10th Mountain Division and Fort Drum:

Majority Leader Schumer said, “Fort Drum is woven in the very fabric of the North Country and essential to our national defense. I was honored to welcome Major General Naumann and Major Johnson to the capital today to discuss how I can best support Fort Drum’s plans and priorities for the upcoming year as well as the long term stability of the installation. The North Country community is eager and able to support the Army in furthering America’s national defense strategy, and it is becoming clearer every day that the future of our military will depend on Fort Drum. I’m proud of the tens of millions in federal support and 1,000+ new soldiers that I’ve delivered to Fort Drum in recent years, and I will never stop fighting to ensure that the heroic men and women serving at Fort Drum have what they need to be mission ready and defend our country.”

At the meeting, Schumer reinforced his commitment to supporting Fort Drum’s military construction (MILCON) projects and ensuring that Fort Drum has the federal support necessary to support the Army and how he is fighting to deliver new funding for Fort Drum in the end of year Defense spending bill, including upgrading lighting and electrical infrastructure on Wheeler-Sack Army Air Field.

Schumer has fought relentlessly to elevate Fort Drum and the North Country to the Army, and deliver robust federal funding to support their mission. After years of relentless advocacy last year her  announced that Fort Drum was selected to house U.S. Army Multi-Domain Task Force (MDTF) #2. Schumer has also worked for years to deliver major federal investment to enhance the bases capabilities for new opportunities like an MDTF unit. Schumer fought for years, personally calling the former Army Secretary, Defense Secretary and Army Chief Of Staff to deliver over $27 million in federal funding to construct a new railhead at Fort Drum, a top priority for the base. The senator also delivered over $21 million for a new Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Hangar at Fort Drum, and he secured $27 million for Fort Drum in the FY22 omnibus to replace the base’s existing water supply that was vulnerable to multiple forms of contamination, requiring Fort Drum to purchase half of its water supply from a municipal source. Schumer also secured nearly $10 million for two major Fort Drum projects in the end-of-year spending package for FY2023.
