Schumer: LI Is Home To A 100-Year-Old Living Legend Who Will Get Special U.S. Senate Honors Ahead Of Holocaust Remembrance Day

Standing with 100-year-old Pina Frassineti Wax from Baldwin, her family and some friends, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer revealed that Long Island is home to a special resident in Pina: a centenarian who survived the Holocaust and is living a life of great meaning and purpose. Ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day next week, Schumer bestowed Baldwin’s very own Pina Frassineti Wax with a United States Capitol flag flown in her honor and announced that she will also receive special U.S. Senate Floor recognition (later today) commemorating her living legend status on Long Island.

“I am proud to honor a living legend right here on Long Island today, and that is Pina Frassineti Wax,” said U.S. Senator Charles Schumer. “Pina is whip smart, energetic and going strong—but she also remembers the horrors of the Holocaust, and having seen it all, Pina has dedicated her life to teaching, loving and learning.”

Schumer explained, “The number of Americans who are both 100-years-old, and also survived the Holocaust, is not a high number, so knowing that a living legend is right on Long Island should give Pina’s family, friends, neighbors and all New Yorkers an amazing life story to celebrate.”

Pina and her family spoke, and so did Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

Schumer unveiled the following, as he presented Ms. Pina Frassineti Wax from Baldwin, with a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol in her honor. He also will speak about Pina later today on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

Whereas: We gather with profound appreciation to honor the life and legacy of Pina Frassineti Wax, a courageous Holocaust survivor, and an incredible Long Islander, whose strength, perseverance, and indomitable spirit has touched the hearts and minds of all who have had the privilege of knowing her; and

Whereas: Pina’s milestone year—her hundredth—serves as a remarkable testament to her perseverance and triumph during one of the darkest chapters of human history, emerging from the horrors of the Holocaust with an unwavering commitment to survival, and rebuilding, while ensuring that the atrocities committed are never forgotten; and

Whereas: As a centenarian, and going—Pina, born in Rome, Italy, has witnessed a century of profound change in the world, from the devastating losses of the Holocaust to the remarkable advancements in human rights, democracy, and peace, always advocating for truth, justice, and remembrance; and

Whereas: Pina has not only survived but she has thrived—from the Jewish ghetto in Rome to the promise of America and her community on Long Island. Pina’s history includes the loss of family in Dachau. Pina remembers well, having to hide with her mother and brother in a catholic convent to escape the Nazis. She would face great trauma and worry during the Holocaust, but she never gave up. Her loving husband, Mario Wax, was also a Jewish Italian. Mario joined the U.S. Army, being awarded a Bronze Star. They shared forty-four wonderful years together.

Whereas: Pina received her Doctorate of Letters from Sapienza University of Rome and Columbia University, ran Israel Bonds on Long Island, and taught at Lake Forest College outside Chicago. Pina has contributed immeasurably to her community and to the preservation of Holocaust memory for future generations, and she is especially proud of her adoring family: her three children, Liza, Orian and Nelson, along with her six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She has bestowed this tremendous family with lessons of history, dignity, equality, and human rights for all; and therefore

Be It Known: That I, Senator Charles E. Schumer, do herby recognize Pina's remarkable life, her extraordinary courage, and invaluable contribution to our shared history. The U.S. Senate honors her 100th year; her extraordinary life; and extends its deepest gratitude for her enduring legacy as a Holocaust survivor, a witness, and a beacon of hope to all.
